The success of a botox treatment is not limited to dose and technique. What you do in the first 48 hours directly affects whether the toxin stays in the target muscle and whether the result is symmetrical.
The first 4 hours: the critical window
- Do not lie down or bend your head forward (including tying shoes or washing up).
- Do not touch or massage the treated area.
- Use your expressions normally — raising your brows is not harmful and actually helps distribution.
The first 24 hours
- Avoid sport, strenuous exercise and any bending movements.
- Stay out of saunas, steam rooms, hot showers and sunbeds.
- Do not sleep face down; try to sleep on your back.
- Wait at least 6 hours before make-up, and do not press on the skin.
The first 48 hours
- Avoid alcohol — it increases the risk of bruising.
- Do not take aspirin or blood thinners without consulting your doctor.
- Postpone facial massage, facials and microneedling.
What is normal
Small red bumps immediately after treatment (resolving in 20–30 minutes), a mild headache, tenderness in the area and occasionally small bruises are all normal. Bruises fade within 3–5 days; arnica cream can speed this up.
When to call the clinic
Do not skip the day-10 review
The result settles fully between days 10 and 14. At this review, symmetry is assessed and a few units may be added if required. At our clinic this session is always free of charge.
To make the effect last
Use sun protection, cut down on smoking, sleep well and maintain your skincare. Botox rests the muscle; the quality of your skin is determined by your daily habits.
